Backing Yourself for Success in The New Year

Blog+ Podcast Quotes by Guest Speakers (2)

Welcome to 2025! I’ve been thinking a lot about how this year can be a turning point—not just for me, but for all of us who are ready to step into leadership with confidence and purpose. The idea of “backing yourself” has been at the forefront of my mind.

This isn’t just a phrase; it’s a mindset. It’s about believing in yourself, showing up with intention, and taking action, even when the path feels uncertain. Let me share a little about how I’m approaching this year, and maybe you’ll find something here that resonates with your journey too.

The Power of Positive Beginnings

When I closed the doors to my Confident Career Leader Program last year, I felt a mix of pride and anticipation. It was a step forward, allowing me to focus on new ways to help educators like you step into leadership roles with clarity and confidence.

Over the holidays, I found myself drawn to uplifting podcasts and messages. One in particular, by Martin Brady, really set the tone for how I want to approach this year. It reminded me of the power of starting with positivity—filling your mind with the right energy to take on challenges and embrace opportunities.

Learning to Back Myself

Backing myself hasn’t always come naturally. I’ve had my share of doubts, wondering if I was good enough or if I had what it takes. Sound familiar?

What changed for me was learning to trust in my abilities. I started practising positive self-talk, affirming my strengths, and carving out time to reflect on what I was doing well. One of the most transformative habits I’ve developed is scripting—writing out my ideal life as if it’s already happening.

For example, when I envisioned hosting this podcast and writing this blog, I didn’t just see it as a distant dream. I wrote it down as if it were real: I am connecting with educators who are ready to grow, helping them step into leadership roles they’re passionate about. Now here I am, living that vision.

Staying Committed and Finding Your People

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that commitment is everything. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing up, even when it’s hard.

But here’s the thing: commitment can feel lonely if you don’t have the right people around you. I’ve made it a point to surround myself with others who inspire me and share my drive for growth. Whether it’s colleagues, friends, or mentors, having a community makes all the difference.

So ask yourself: who are your people? Who lifts you up and keeps you accountable?

Building Leadership Skills

I often tell my clients that leadership isn’t just about experience; it’s about the impact you make. Over the years, I’ve refined some strategies that help me—and others—stand out:

  1. Storytelling: I used to shy away from sharing my journey, but I’ve realised how powerful a well-told story can be. When you articulate your experiences with authenticity, people listen.

  2. The STAR Technique: This has been a game-changer for interviews. Structuring responses with a clear Situation, Task, Action, and Result helps me showcase what I bring to the table.

  3. Resilience: Job hunting can feel discouraging at times, but I’ve learned to treat every step—every rejection, every interview—as part of the process. It’s all building my skills for the next opportunity.

My Journey as a Business Owner

Running my own business has been one of the greatest adventures of my life. It’s taught me resilience, the importance of taking small steps, and how to embrace imperfection.

Toastmasters was a big part of that journey. I used to be terrified of public speaking, but each meeting helped me chip away at that fear. Now, I can stand in front of an audience—or behind this keyboard—with confidence.

And through it all, I’ve leaned on coaching and mentorship. Investing in myself has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.

Cultivating Self-Awareness

If there’s one thing I wish I’d embraced sooner, it’s the value of self-awareness. Understanding my strengths, my blind spots, and what truly motivates me has been transformative—not just for my career, but for my sense of purpose.

For those of you transitioning into leadership roles, I encourage you to take time for self-reflection. Coaching and counselling can be incredible tools for gaining clarity. And don’t be afraid to ask for feedback—it’s a gift, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Why 2025 Feels Different

This year, I’m backing myself like never before. I’m committing to my goals, leaning into my community, and trusting that the work I’m doing—both for myself and for you—will make an impact.

I want the same for you. You have so much to offer, and I hope you see that in yourself. So let’s make 2025 the year we stop doubting and start doing. Let’s back ourselves, together.

And if you’ve found value in these words, I’d love for you to share your thoughts or rate the podcast on Spotify. It’s a small action that helps spread the message to others who might need it.

Here’s to a year of growth, courage, and leadership!
